Yes, i was only sixteen.
Growing up, music, and at the same time Elvis Presley, became a clue to the direction my life would take.

Life can be tough on you, but no matter what happens, music will remain unchanged through the ages and shape our lives.

Denmark on a Saturday evening in September 1968. Restaurant Nordfalster was to be the setting for a cozy Saturday ball for teenagers from the local school in town. The rooms were decorated with all sorts of decorations, a large mirror ball on the ceiling, and a number of colored lamps and spotlights to illuminate the stage itself.

That time we didn't have karaoke. In fact, it was unthinkable that anyone else who wasn't a member of a performing music group would be allowed to sing a song or two.

But I had a terrible desire to try. 17 years old, full of expectations, I went to the stage to talk to the guys there, and already 5 minutes later it was agreed that I would sing a song, and if it went well, I could sing another.

People had started to gather in the hall, found their respective seats, the girls came waltzing in with beautiful dresses on, with rose bracelets on their left wrists. Suddenly she stood there, beautiful, wonderful and looking around confused, as if she didn't know what to do with herself.

I had trouble taking my eyes off her, and then realized that I was just staring at her in awe. But then I pulled myself together and asked if I could help her get settled in her seat. After that was sorted out, my thoughts started to circle about the song I was going to sing.

I was and still am an Elvis Presley fan to the core, so I thought I would sing the song "Can't help falling in love" which in my opinion was the finest song in the entire movie Blue Hawaii from 1961

Gradually everyone got into their seats, the orchestra started playing, and there was a little dancing. I danced with the girl (with a secret name) who I helped find her seat.

After the third melody, I was called, so I went up on stage. With trembling hands I took the microphone, told the musicians what I wanted to sing. There were some head-shaking smiles, but they said it was ok. So there I stood, with a microphone, and my gaze locked on the girl down in the hall. At that time I didn't know that I would later have to follow her for a while.

The music started, and I stood there singing the first verses of the melody below.....

After the first 20 seconds, the girls in the hall started screaming. Something that made me stop, and for some or inexplicable reason made me run off the stage.

Well, it turned out not to be the first time. I tried a couple more times later, but my stage fright effectively put an end to all performances.

Now I'm old, but the desire for singing and music is still in my heart, so is Elvis Presley. Today I can go around bars and restaurants and sing to the audience.

So if you, dear reader, think you've missed something in music, don't despair. Music never dies. Just hang out and sing your heart out. It's actually good for both your health and your soul.

And remember that it costs between 18-28 calories to sing a song.
